The Isoprene Story: A mini documentary on Biosphere 2 tropical forest research
Posted on May 9, 2012 | 1 CommentI made this movie to share an interesting research project I’ve been working on at Biosphere 2. This is an example of the kind of research we do in the tropical forest biome to understand tropical forest interactions with climate change. Ronald Regan blamed trees for polluting the atmosphere through the emission of large amounts... -
Climbing Baboquivari Peak, southern Arizona
Posted on May 5, 2012 | 1 Comment[Ty] This climb has been a long time coming! I feel like Babo is a sort of right of passage to novice climbers in Arizona. My main motivation for learning to climb in AZ has been to learn the technical skills necessary to step up our outdoor pursuits to include mountains and more technical terrain.... -
Measuring how leaves breathe with Biosphere 2 visitors
Posted on March 4, 2012 | 2 CommentsYesterday I did an outreach event as part of my B2 Science and Society Fellowship. I helped visitors to take leaf-level measurements on branch clippings taken from the Biosphere 2 tropical forest biome using instruments called the LiCOR 6400 and poromoter. I really enjoyed talking to people about my research, and how the instruments work.... -
Packraft Alaska 2009: Trip Four—Beartrack River Circuit, Glacier Bay
Posted on July 27, 2009 | No Comments"We had a couple of instants to relax while our brains denied resolution of the hazy outline of a mother grizzly and three rather large cubs. They were a couple hundred yards from us, and we were downwind in a fog rendering us invisible--they started toward us. Crap. We made a hasty crossing of several..." -
Edge of the Amazon Jul-Aug 2011—Five: The search for the edge (Part 2—not everybody likes cameras; making friends on family farms)
Posted on August 3, 2011 | 1 CommentWe rolled in on a beautiful misty morning the following day and notified the manager’s wife of our presence, as requested, and set off to an edge to work. Enamored with my new camera and the interesting and beautiful sites, I took photos and videos as we passed infrastructure and travelled through the landscape. As... -

A Biosphere 2 mini-documentary on tropical forest research
Posted on November 30, 2011 | No CommentsUniversity of Arizona science journalism student, Rikki Mitchell, interviewed Neill Prohaska and me (Ty Taylor) about research in Biosphere 2’s tropical forest biome. She produced this excellent mini-documentary as a class project. Science journalism student, Rikki Mitchell, interviews Neill Prohaska next to an atmosphere-observation tower inside the Biosphere 2 tropical forest biome. ... -
The quest to find my research question
Posted on October 20, 2011 | No CommentsI am very happy to have been awarded Biosphere 2’s Science and Society Fellowship (2011-2012), a programme which provides graduate student scientists training and opportunities to develop how they interpret their work to public audiences. As part of the programme, I will be giving a couple of talks at Biosphere 2, I am taking a... -

Edge of the Amazon, Jul-Aug 2011—Four: The search for the edge of the Amazon (Part 1—Exploration of an industrial farm)
Posted on July 31, 2011 | 2 CommentsFinding the right “edge of the Amazon” for my research has been harder than I had anticipated. To briefly explain once again, I’m using hot, dry forest edges as a simulator of Amazon forests under the projected future climate. So what I need is a primary forest abutting an edge that has been maintained for... -
Edge of the Amazon Jul-Aug 2011–Three: A little local scenery
Posted on July 20, 2011 | 2 CommentsHere’s a video of routine snake removal, a little local scenery, and a day hike I did upstream with the hope of floating the stream back to camp. It turns out that streams here have forests growing in them, which makes floating any distance impossible. It was nice just to go out solo and let... -
Edge of the Amazon Jul-Aug 2011: Two—First days in the field
Posted on July 14, 2011 | No CommentsThe work is going slower and harder than I thought—who’d have guessed?! I think the following posts will just be quick and touch on bits and pieces of my time here, and maybe after I get back I can write something nicer (and I’m gradually putting together a movie!). This is the igape (stream) below...
